A few weeks ago, I used these foam puzzles pieces to create cubes for Milli to play with.  She was fascinated.  For the next couple of days, she would bring me pieces and say “Mama help, box please.”

Then struggling, she started to build the boxes all by herself.  She could attach four of the sides.

About two weeks ago, I walked into the living room, and there were about five completed boxes laying across the floor.

A few days ago, Milli walked into the kitchen holding this 4 x 2 rectangle made of the foam pieces.  It was missing one pieces and she was coming to ask for help.

I laughed and laughed.  I laughed because I was AMAZED!  Three weeks ago, she didn’t even think to build 3D constructs.  All by herself, she thought “Hey I wonder if I could build two box together.  Okay how about three.  Okay eight!”

Then I realized that this is exactly why I’m a teacher.  I’m not a teacher just because I like organization and building curriculum.  It’s not because I like grading or classroom control.  It’s not because I like holidays and summers off.  I’m a teacher, because I love learning.  I get giddy when I see some explore curiosity, taking an idea to the next step.  I love to see growth.
